Shipping Costs in Chile: How Much to Charge Without Losing Money

Shipping can be your best selling point or your worst financial enemy.

What Does Shipping Really Cost in Chile?

If you sell online in Chile, shipping is probably your most persistent headache. It is not just the courier fee -- it is the packaging, the time you spend preparing each order, and the customer's expectation of fast, affordable delivery.

Here are the current ranges for a standard package (up to 3 kg):

CourierSantiago to SantiagoSantiago to Other RegionsEstimated Delivery
ChilexpressCLP 3,000 -- 5,000CLP 5,000 -- 9,0001-3 days
StarkenCLP 2,500 -- 4,500CLP 4,500 -- 8,0002-4 days
Correos de ChileCLP 2,000 -- 3,500CLP 3,500 -- 6,5003-7 days
BluExpressCLP 2,800 -- 4,000CLP 4,000 -- 7,5002-4 days

These figures vary based on volumetric weight, distance, and whether you have a negotiated contract. If you ship more than 30 orders per month, negotiate your rates. Every courier has account managers who can offer discounts of 15% to 40%.

Free Shipping, Flat Rate, or Actual Cost?

There are three main strategies, and none is perfect:

  • Free shipping above a minimum order. The most popular approach. It raises your average order value and gives the customer a sense of winning something. If your average ticket is CLP 25,000, set the free-shipping threshold at CLP 35,000.
  • Flat rate. Simple to communicate. You charge CLP 3,990 nationwide and absorb the difference on remote destinations. Works well if most of your orders ship within the central zone.
  • Actual courier cost. Transparent but painful. The customer sees CLP 8,000 for shipping to Punta Arenas (Chile's far south) and abandons the cart.

My recommendation: flat rate for the central zone plus a small surcharge for remote regions. It is honest and does not eat into your margin.

Three Mistakes I See All the Time

  1. Not factoring in packaging costs. A box, kraft paper, tape, and a shipping label run CLP 500 to 1,500 per order. If you do not include that in your calculations, your margin evaporates.
  2. Using a single courier. Starken may be cheaper going south; Chilexpress faster within Santiago. Compare and pick the best option for each destination.
  3. Ignoring volumetric weight. Couriers charge by whichever is greater: actual weight or volumetric weight. If you sell pillows or lightweight but bulky products, the volume will surprise you.

Shipping is not an expense -- it is part of your value proposition. Calculate carefully, communicate transparently, and review your rates every three months. Your margins will thank you.
