Email Marketing for Ecommerce: The 5 Emails Every Store Needs

Email is still the channel with the best return -- if you use it right.

Isn't Email Dead?

No. Email marketing delivers an average return of $36 for every $1 spent, according to industry studies. No other channel comes close. And yet, most online stores send nothing beyond the purchase confirmation.

The problem is not that email does not work. It is that nobody wants to sit down and write emails. The good news: with 5 automated emails you cover 80% of what you need.

The 5 Essential Emails

1. Welcome

Sent automatically when someone subscribes or creates an account. It is the email with the highest open rate (50-60%).

What to include:

  • Who you are and what you sell (one paragraph)
  • An incentive: a first-purchase coupon (10% works well)
  • A direct link to your best-selling products

2. Abandoned Cart

70% of shopping carts are abandoned. An email sent 1 hour after the customer leaves recovers 5% to 15% of those sales.

What to include:

  • A photo of the product they left behind
  • A button that goes straight to checkout
  • Optionally, a discount if they do not buy within 24 hours

On Shopify, configure this under Settings > Checkout > Abandoned cart emails. You can also use Klaviyo or Mailchimp for more control.

3. Shipping Confirmation with Tracking

The customer has already paid. Now they want to know when it arrives. This email reduces "where is my order?" inquiries by 30-40%.

What to include:

  • Tracking number with a direct link to the courier
  • Estimated delivery date
  • Contact details in case of issues

4. Post-Purchase (3-5 Days After Delivery)

This email has two goals: confirm everything arrived safely and ask for a review.

What to include:

  • A simple question: "Did everything arrive okay?"
  • A link to leave a review or rating
  • Complementary product suggestions

5. Win-Back (60-90 Days Without a Purchase)

If a customer has not returned in 2-3 months, an email with an incentive can bring them back.

What to include:

  • "We miss you" (but skip the cheese)
  • New arrivals or product updates
  • An exclusive coupon with an expiration date

What Tool Should I Use?

The most practical options:

  • Klaviyo. The standard for Shopify. Free up to 250 contacts. The automated flows are excellent.
  • Mailchimp. Works with any platform. Free up to 500 contacts. More generic but solid.
  • Shopify Email. Built into Shopify. Basic but enough to start. 10,000 free emails per month.

The Most Important Rule

Do not send emails you would not want to receive. If it does not add value, do not send it. One good email per week is better than three empty ones.

Set up these 5 automated emails in one afternoon and they will work for you every single day. It is the automation with the best effort-to-results ratio you can implement in your store.
