How to Photograph Products Without a Professional Studio

Your phone, a window, and a white poster board -- that is all you need to get started.

Do I Need a Professional Camera?

No. An iPhone or Samsung from the last three years takes photos that are more than good enough for an online store. I have seen stores with DSLR photos that look worse than ones shot on a phone, because the difference is not in the equipment -- it is in the lighting and composition.

What you do need:

  • Natural light. A large window is your best friend. Place the product near the window, never in direct sunlight (harsh light creates hard shadows and glare).
  • A clean background. A large white poster board or a plain fabric. White backgrounds are the ecommerce standard because they do not distract and they look professional.
  • A tripod or support. It can be a CLP 5,000 phone tripod or a stack of books. The point is to keep the phone steady to avoid blurry shots.

The Photo Session Step by Step

1. Set up. Lean the poster board against a wall to create a smooth curve (no hard crease). This is called an "infinity curve" and makes the background look seamless.

2. Position the product. Center it with space around it. The product should fill about 60% to 80% of the frame.

3. Take at least 4 photos per product:

  • Front view (the hero image)
  • 45-degree angle (shows depth)
  • Detail shot (texture, label, material)
  • In use or in context (if applicable)

4. Lighting. If the shadow on one side is too harsh, place a white poster board on the opposite side of the window to bounce the light back. It is the oldest trick in photography and it works beautifully.

5. Phone settings:

  • Turn off the flash. Always.
  • Use the main camera (1x), not the zoom or ultra wide.
  • Turn on the grid to help with centering.
  • Wipe the lens with a cloth before you start.

Quick Edits That Make a Big Difference

You do not need Photoshop. These free apps handle 90% of what you need:

  • Snapseed (free). Adjust brightness, contrast, and crop. It has a healing tool for removing blemishes from the background.
  • Remove.bg (web). Automatically removes the background if you need a transparent or pure white backdrop.
  • Canva (free). For adding frames, "new" badges, or "sale" tags if your platform does not do it natively.

Minimum editing for every photo:

  • Increase brightness by 10-15%
  • Bump up the contrast slightly
  • Crop to center the product
  • Export at the highest resolution possible

Mistakes That Ruin Product Photos

  • Flash photography. It makes everything look flat and cheap.
  • Cluttered backgrounds. The dining table with plates in the back does not sell.
  • Inconsistent sizing or aspect ratios. In your store, all photos should have the same proportions. The standard is square (1:1) or 4:5.
  • Dirty or wrinkled products. Iron the clothes, clean the item, remove price stickers.

You do not need to be a photographer. You need consistency. One hour every week shooting with good light and a clean background completely transforms how your store looks.
