Instagram Shopping Step by Step: How to Set It Up and Sell From Your Feed
Your Instagram catalog won't activate itself -- here's how to get it right on the first try.
Every time a client tells me "I want to sell on Instagram," the first thing I ask is: do you already have Instagram Shopping set up? Most say no. Not because it's hard, but because Meta requires specific things that aren't exactly obvious.
Let me walk you through how to actually get it working.
What Do You Need Before Getting Started?
Before touching any button in Instagram, make sure you have these in place:
- Professional Instagram account (business or creator -- not personal)
- Facebook Page linked to that account
- Catalog in Meta Commerce Manager with real products, not loose images
- Verified domain from your online store
- Compliance with Meta's commerce policies (no replicas, regulated products, etc.)
If you use Shopify, the Facebook/Instagram sales channel syncs your catalog automatically. If not, you can upload a CSV or connect a manual data source.
| Method | Speed | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify + FB channel | Automatic | Low |
| Manual CSV | 1-2 hours | High (every change) |
| Pixel + dynamic catalog | Half a day | Medium |
How to Tag Products in Your Posts
Once Meta approves your shop (which can take anywhere from 24 hours to 2 weeks), you can start tagging:
- Upload your photo or reel as usual
- Tap "Tag products" before publishing
- Select the product from your catalog
- Publish
Each post supports up to 5 products per image and up to 20 per carousel. Use them. A carousel with tagged products gets up to 40% more engagement than one without tags.
Common mistake: uploading photos with overlaid text like "50% OFF SALE." Meta rejects these almost every time. Use clean product images and put your offers in the caption instead.
Three Things That Delay Approval
After setting up dozens of stores, these are the most frequent reasons for rejection:
- Unverified domain. Do this from Business Settings > Brand Safety > Domains. It's just copying a meta tag into your site.
- Empty or broken catalog. Every product needs a name, price, description, image, and valid link. If anything fails, Meta rejects the entire catalog.
- New account with little activity. If you created the account yesterday and apply for Shopping today, you'll probably get rejected. Post organic content for at least 2-3 weeks first.
The Detail Most People Miss
Instagram Shopping doesn't replace your online store. It's a storefront. Checkout still happens on your website (in Latin America, Instagram's native checkout isn't available). That means your store needs to load fast, look good on mobile, and support local payment methods.
