Selling on MercadoLibre Without Abandoning Your Own Store
MercadoLibre gives you traffic, but your own store gives you margin -- the key is using both without losing your mind.
MercadoLibre is the largest marketplace in Latin America. If you sell physical products in the region, ignoring it doesn't make sense. But going all-in on it doesn't make sense either.
What works is using MercadoLibre as an acquisition channel and your store as a retention channel. Here's how.
Why Not Bet Everything on MercadoLibre?
MercadoLibre commissions range from 13% to 31% depending on the category and your seller tier. Add the cost of free shipping (which you almost always absorb) and margins get squeezed fast.
| Channel | Typical Commission | Brand Control | Customer Data |
|---|---|---|---|
| MercadoLibre | 13-31% | Low | No email access |
| Your own store | 2-4% (payment gateway) | Full | Complete |
| Falabella.com | 15-25% | Medium | No email access |
The biggest problem: on MercadoLibre, you don't own the customer relationship. You don't have their email, you can't do remarketing, and you can't build your brand. It's borrowed traffic.
The Two-Channel Strategy
This is what I recommend to the stores I advise:
- On MercadoLibre: list your highest-turnover, competitively priced products. Optimize titles with keywords (MercadoLibre's search engine works like a mini Google). Use Mercado Ads if your margins allow it.
- On your store: offer exclusive bundles, first-purchase discounts, and loyalty programs. This is where you capture the email and build your customer base.
- The bridge: inside the packaging of every MercadoLibre order, include a physical insert with a coupon for your store. This doesn't violate MercadoLibre's policies as long as you don't include direct contact information.
Watch out: never list a lower price on your store than on MercadoLibre at the same time. MercadoLibre penalizes that if they detect it. Use coupons or first-purchase discounts instead of visibly lower prices.
How to Manage Inventory Across Both Channels
This is where most sellers struggle. If you sell the last unit on your store and don't update MercadoLibre, you get an order you can't fulfill. And MercadoLibre penalizes that heavily.
Practical options:
- Shopify + sync app (like Astroselling or MultiBuy). These connect inventory between your store and MercadoLibre.
- Simple ERP like Bsale or similar tools that centralize stock.
- Manual buffer: reserve 20% of stock for each channel if your volume is low and you update manually.
Automatic syncing is worth it starting at around 50 combined monthly sales. Before that, a spreadsheet and discipline get the job done.
What Nobody Tells You
MercadoLibre rewards shipping speed more than almost any other variable. If you can offer 24-hour delivery in your area, your listing gets a boost. Mercado Envios Flex changed the rules -- check whether it's available in your city.
