How to Choose the Right Platform for Your Online Store
The best platform is the one you will actually use — not the one with the most features.
One of the first decisions when selling online is choosing where to build your store. And there are so many options that it is easy to get lost comparing features you will probably never use.
What Are the Real Options?
These are the platforms I see working in day-to-day operations:
- Shopify: The most complete and stable. You pay monthly, everything works without touching code. Ideal if you want to focus on selling, not maintaining a website.
- Tiendanube: Popular in Latin America, more affordable than Shopify. Good for getting started, but it falls short as the business grows.
- WooCommerce: Free in theory, but you need hosting, maintenance, and someone who knows WordPress. It is not "free" in practice.
- MercadoShops: Integrated with Mercado Libre (Latin America's largest marketplace). Limited in design and customization.
How Do I Decide?
It comes down to three things:
| Factor | Shopify | Tiendanube | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ease of use | High | Medium-High | Medium-Low |
| Monthly cost | ~$30 USD | From free | Hosting + plugins |
| Customization | Medium (apps) | Low-Medium | High (with a dev) |
| Support in Spanish | Yes | Yes | Community |
| Local payment gateways | Webpay, Flow | Webpay, Flow | Various plugins |
My direct recommendation: if you are just starting and do not have a technical team, use Shopify. It is more expensive than the free alternatives, but the time you save is worth more than the $30 USD per month.
If you have a trusted developer and want full control, WooCommerce makes sense. But keep in mind: maintenance is your responsibility. Updates, security, backups — all of it is on you.
What If I Want to Switch Later?
Switching platforms is possible, but it is neither free nor instant. It means migrating products, redirecting URLs so you do not lose your Google rankings, and reconfiguring everything.
That is why it pays to choose well from the start. Not the perfect platform — that does not exist — but the one that fits your reality today and has room to grow.
A few questions that help you decide:
- How many products do you have?
- Will you manage the store yourself or will someone else?
- Do you need specific features (subscriptions, marketplace, B2B)?
- How much can you invest monthly?
Answer those honestly and the choice gets much simpler. If you need help evaluating your case, reach out and we will work through it together.
