Ecommerce 2027: what's coming and how to prepare

The trends that matter are the ones you can apply tomorrow — not the ones that sound good at a conference.

Year-end is prediction season. And every December, the timeline fills up with articles about "the 10 trends that will revolutionize ecommerce." Most of them are last year's list with a fresh coat of hype.

I'd rather talk about what I'm seeing work in the real stores we support, what we're building ourselves, and what I think can actually move the needle for a small business in 2027. No smoke and mirrors.

1. Applied AI — not the hype, the tool

2026 was the year AI stopped being news and started being a tool. I'm not talking about robots replacing your team. I'm talking about concrete things:

  • Product descriptions generated in seconds and edited by a human. What used to take an hour per product now takes five minutes.
  • Automated customer service for frequently asked questions. "How much is shipping?" no longer needs a person answering.
  • Data analysis that used to require an analyst. Today you can ask an AI to summarize your quarter's sales and flag anomalies.

What doesn't work: turning AI loose without supervision. Customers notice when they're talking to a poorly configured bot, and the trust you lose is hard to win back. At MPT we use AI to build faster, but always with human judgment on top.

2. Conversational commerce — WhatsApp is the channel

If you ask me what the most underrated channel in ecommerce is, the answer is still WhatsApp. And in 2027 that's not going to change — it's going to deepen.

WhatsApp Business has evolved: catalogs inside the app, integrated payments in some markets, automated flows. But the most powerful feature is still the simplest one: talking to the customer.

The stores that did best this year respond fast, send real product photos, and confirm shipping via chat. If you do one new thing in 2027, make it taking WhatsApp seriously as a sales channel, not just a support tool.

3. Same-day logistics expands beyond major cities

This year, same-day delivery started moving beyond just the capital. Express couriers and new local operators are now offering same-day service in secondary cities and metro areas.

If you sell impulse-buy products, fast shipping is a real competitive advantage. You don't need to compete on price if you compete on speed. We saw this with Despacha (our shipping platform): stores that activated express shipping saw their checkout conversion rate climb.

4. Live shopping — late to the party, but showing up

In Asia it moves billions. In Latin America it's still early days, but 2026 showed real signals: local brands doing Instagram Lives with integrated carts, TikTok Shop growing in Mexico and Brazil.

Will it explode in 2027? Probably not. But if you sell products that benefit from visual demonstration, a weekly 30-minute live is more effective than 10 static posts. You don't need professional production — you need authenticity and consistency.

5. Sustainability as a real differentiator

This isn't greenwashing anymore. Younger consumers are making purchasing decisions based on brands' environmental impact. Recyclable packaging, carbon offset on shipments, transparent sourcing.

But sustainability has to be real. Slapping a green badge on your site without changing anything in your operation is worse than doing nothing. What you can actually do: reduce unnecessary packaging, offer consolidated shipping, and be transparent about your supply chain.

What I actually believe

After a year of building tools, supporting stores, and watching how the market shifts, my conclusion is simple: the competitive advantage in 2027 won't be technological — it will be operational.

The tools are available to everyone. The difference will come down to who uses them well, who responds fast, who ships on time, who truly knows their customers.

You don't need the latest technology. You need to execute the basics well. That's what we're building at Mi Primera Tienda, and that's what I'm inviting you to do in 2027.
