5 AI Tools Your Small Business Can Start Using Today (Free or Almost)

You don't need to be a tech expert for AI to work for you.

Every week there's a new AI tool. The problem isn't a lack of options -- it's knowing which ones actually deliver when you have a small team and limited time.

I've spent months testing AI tools with online store owners and small businesses. These are the five that actually made a difference in day-to-day operations.

1. ChatGPT for Product Descriptions

Whether you sell 50 or 500 products, writing unique descriptions is painful. ChatGPT (the free version) lets you generate decent copy in seconds. The trick: give it specific context. Don't just say "describe this product." Tell it:

  • What the product is
  • Who buys it
  • What problem it solves
  • What tone you want

The output isn't perfect, but it saves you 80% of the work. You just edit and publish.

2. Canva with AI for Social Media

Canva already had great templates. Now with Magic Design, you upload a product photo and it generates multiple design options for Instagram or Facebook. It's like having a junior designer available 24/7. The free plan is enough to get started; the Pro plan (around $13 USD/month) is worth every cent.

3. Tidio or JivoChat for Automated Support

A basic chatbot on your store can answer the most common questions without you being glued to your phone. Tidio has a free plan that includes up to 100 conversations per month with automated replies. You can set it up in an afternoon.

4. NotionAI to Organize Your Business

If you already use Notion for notes, the built-in AI feature helps you summarize documents, generate task lists, and even draft supplier emails. It's not free, but if your problem is internal organization, the $10/month pays for itself.

5. Mailchimp with AI Assistant

Mailchimp now suggests subject lines, optimizes send times, and even drafts emails. For a small business doing basic email marketing, this cuts your work hours in half.

Where Should You Start?

My recommendation: don't try to use all five at once. Pick the one that solves your biggest pain point today. If you waste time writing, start with ChatGPT. If design is your bottleneck, go with Canva. AI doesn't replace your judgment, but it frees up hours so you can focus on what matters.
